What Women Say

"I think it is degrading because it's placing a label on women that we didn't ask for and, honestly, that may not even be accurate. Some women are not able to or don't want to give birth. Some women don't menstruate for various reasons. If anyone expressed that they prefer to be referred to in such a way, I would honor that but I'm a woman and prefer to be referred to as such. If you want to add a label to yourself, go for it but I don't think it's fair to force labels on a whole demographic without their consent."

"I'm already described as a woman, why do I need to adhere to other people's labels? We're not incubators, were human beings. Referring to women as "birthing person" is dehumanizing. We already have a label, we don't need to complicate things."

"It’s not inclusive. It’s just straight up rude. Reducing women to one basic bodily function. We don’t call men “nutting people” or “people who deposit sperm”. Men are more than a nut and women are more than making babies.

I had to have a c section. So I’m not even really a “birthing person”. I’m a “carry a baby and have to get them cut out person” I’m a woman. And I’m more than having babies.

I feel like this kind of language tears down what our grandmothers fought for. They fought for equality, this language reduces women to basic functions- therefore making us “less than” again. I want to be treated like a human, not a tool."
